Articulated Robots

The base and the arm are linked using a twisting joint. With each joint, it provides additional flexibility and freedom of movement to the machine. Most industrial models have anywhere between 4-6 joints. They also have a range of movements that can be pre-programmed.

Cartesian

They are also known as gantry machines. They have three linear joints and use the XYZ axis method to move around. An attached wrist like lever allows 360-degree movement. The three joints allow linear motion along the axis. Though they are a little low on flexibility, they usually compensate it with power and freedom of axis. These robots are good in manufacturing industries that need heavy work and pressure.

Cylinder Model

For such machines, one lever and base joint connect the links. The joint at the base is for rotational purposes, while the prismatic joint serves the linear movement of the hand. They work within a cylindrical work envelope and are very convenient to use. The best part of this simple design is the ease of customization and maintaining them becomes very convenient.

Overall there are six major varieties of such machines. But the ones mentioned above are basic versions and the rest are variations and additions over them. Models like SCARA or vertically articulated are a few. Irrespective of the usage, the basic functioning of a robot is pretty much the same. You can use it for heavy industrial purposes or for home requirements. The model changes as per the need. The program that per-sets its functionality, and the pressure or power the machine is required to use. Using these three parameters, you can check on the right kind of robot that you require for your own design and functionality.
