Articulated Robots: The first type of Industrial Robot names based on mechanical configuration is Articulated robots. These industrial robots resemble a human arm in their configuration, and they offer the maximum flexibility designs. They are commonly used in arc welding, food packaging, spot welding, glass handling, etc.
- Advantages: The robots are extremely fast and provide a large amount of work while using less space. You can also align them easily to multiple planes.
- Disadvantages: The articulated robots need high maintenance and require a dedicated robot controller due to their complicated programming and kinetics.
Cartesian Robots: The Cartesian robots are also known as gantry or rectilinear robots. The common uses of this kind of robot are loading and unloading, place and pick operations, nuclear material handling, etc.
- Advantages: Cartesian robots are easy to operate and can be programmed offline easily. They can handle heavy loads at less cost and involve high customization as well.
- Disadvantages: The Cartesian robots require a large installation area, and they are complicated to assemble.
SCARA Robots: SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) is specifically designed for lateral movements. They are often used for assembling applications, packaging, machine loading, palletizing, etc.
- Advantages: These robots have a high speed with excellent repeatability.
- Disadvantages: These cannot be programmed offline and are limited to planar surfaces.
Delta Robots: Delta robots are also commonly known as parallel link robots. The common uses of delta robots are picking, placing, and product transformation applications.
- Advantages: These robots are extremely fast with high operational accuracy.
- Disadvantages: They are complicated to operate therefore require a dedicated robot controller.
Polar Robots: Polar robots are called spherical robots because their work envelope is spherical. They are commonly used in glass handling, injection molding, stacking, unstacking, forging, welding, etc., applications.
- Advantages: The Polar robots can reach all around because they require less space to acquire. And, these robots provide a large work volume with less floor space.
- Disadvantages: These robots require a very sophisticated control system and have a short vertical reach.
Cylindrical Robots: Cylindrical robots are made with a compact design that allows the arm of the robot to reach tight envelopes of work with the same speed and repeatability. They are most commonly used for simple operations like picking, rotating, and placing materials.
- Advantages: These robots are extremely easy to install and operate with minimum assembly.
- Disadvantages: Cylindrical robots have low accuracy in directions of movements and can not reach around the obstacles.
